States like California, New York, Michigan and North Dakota use celebrity endorsements to get their point across, but Travel Oregon has opted for something different. The state’s new tourism ad, “Only Slightly Exaggerated,” emphasizes Oregon’s beautiful landscapes and bustling creativity with animation that feels like something straight out of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli.<br /> <br /> Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most famous Japanese animators in the world. As the founder of the world famous, Studio Ghibli, he was responsible for anime classics such as My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Ponyo. <br /> <br /> Miyazaki's animation style certainly has elements that are exaggerated for both creative, stylistic and thematic effects. As such, this campaign from Travel Oregon pays homage to that, starting with its title, "Only Slightly Exaggerated." After seeing the video ad, you will most certainly see the exaggeration of everything from color, size, facial expressions, etc... The video is brimming with big rabbits, serene fishing spots, newspaper-reading frogs, a bearded cloud man, and whales swimming among the cumulonimbus. "Slightly" might be stretching things a bit, but the video ad is absolutely beautiful and it will definitely makes you want to pack our bags and catch the next flight to Portland International Airport.<br /> <br /> The ad also pays homages in other, more subtle ways that only Miyazaki fans would appreciate. For example, The opening sequence is set in a lush woodland not unlike the spirit forest from Princess Mononoke; later, kids ride a giant rabbit through a field of flowers like they’re taking Catbus in My Neighbor Totoro. The spot even ends with a young woman lying in grass and looking up at the sky, just like the opening to Kiki’s Delivery Service. <br /> <br /> According to Travel Oregon's director of global communications, Linea Gagliano, the Miyazaki influence was not accidental, and that harkening back to his work just felt right to them. "It definitely did come from inspiration from anime experts like Miyazaki and Disney as well. We really felt like the Japanese anime style captured what we were going for and just felt more whimsical, fanciful, and felt like something that evoked the feeling of being in Oregon. Photos, while incredibly stunning and beautiful, don't capture the feeling of being in Oregon... That's part of the reason that we went with animation... We definitely wanted it to be original, but wanted to evoke that same feeling we all had when we watched those anime films."<br /> <br /> Even so, Travel Oregon wanted the landscapes to be as accurate as possible despite all the fantasy imagery. "While we do have a caterpillar on a mountain bike and huge bunnies going through the tulip fields, the tulip fields are real, the giant bunnies are subject to availability," Gagliano said with a laugh while commenting on the "Slightly Exaggerated" tagline. <br /> <br /> <a href="https://traveloregon.com/">Travel Oregon’s website</a> offers viewers real-life resources to follow up on the commercial’s wonder. This transition is not only beneficial for nature and people, but also for animals.<br /> With this in mind, Jung von Matt/Neckar created the film, Guter Stoff, for German energy company EnBW, to celebrate green energy. The agency chose to take a humorous approach to the project - an angle that is rarely associated to green energy. <br /> <br /> In this funny animation, produced by Sehsucht and directed by Hans-Christoph Schultheiss, three birds enjoy the effects of getting ‘a buzz’ from the green electricity lines they are sitting on. A ‘high’ pigeon hallucinates that a passing squirrel is a cat and the same squirrel, once ‘high’ also, believes himself to be a bird who can fly - a very amusing and enjoyable adventure for all creatures present.<br /> <br /> “As using green energy is an important issue to us, we instinctively went for a realistic character design rather than an abstract simplification like angry birds etc. which, in turn, would have lowered the message to that abstract level. We immediately loved the contrast between the birds' lifelike look and the fact that these three fellows not only talk like a bunch of college stoners but also get high on green electricity. We tried to apply this overarching idea to all facets of the production, from animation to the final rendering and everything in between.<br /> <br /> We believe this film brings life to the subject of green energy without the moralizing undertone that you hear in most commercial concepts, which is ideal for the intended audience.” Says Hans-Christoph Schultheiss, Director and Creative Lead, Sehsucht Hamburg.<br /> <br /> Sehsucht’s animation team respected the animals’ physiology. Led by Design Director Stefan Woronko, Nice Shoes animated close to 40 pieces and elements centered around the team’s rallying cry of “We The North,” which celebrates the Raptors’ identity as the NBA’s sole Canadian team. <br /> Check it out here: https://vimeo.com/214024708<br /> <br /> Woronko started with the colors, elements and type that the Raptors had established as their visual identity, and worked to fill the frame with motion. The supplied plaid pattern was also explored, with the frame transitioning quickly through elements via a diamond on a 45-degree angle. Animations were created for every location in the arena with a screen, with designs adjusted to work within the different aspect ratios, all while maintaining a fast-paced frenzy. <br /> <br /> “‘We The North’ is a really strong starting point. From there, we worked to create a lot of visuals that would tie into that. There were some topographic elements and supplied illustrations in their initial brief that we worked into the backgrounds, and I also created some hand-drawn elements to give every frame texture and depth,” said Woronko.<br /> <br /> The animations had to function with the live aspect of the game, as they would be played back and cut into key replay moments by the team’s onsite editors. From an audio perspective, Nice Shoes delivered pieces that were silent, but that had been designed with the rhythm of a high-stakes game in mind. <br /> <br /> “We used temp audio, knowing that everything would have to work with any sports anthem or chants. You can’t work in a vacuum though, so I would go on Youtube and cut to fan chants,” added Woronko. “The chants are broken up into syllables, and we would time the elements to anticipate the cadence of the crowd. For example, ‘Let’s Go Raptors’ - the type, the ball, all the background elements - they all move in time with how the crowd would cheer.” <br /> <br /> Taking on this project was a labor of love for Woronko, who has been a fan since the team’s inception.<br /> <br /> “I was so excited to be there at Game One. Feeling dejected, he runs away to the human city in the distance, leaving his worried parents behind with nothing more than a newly laid Easter egg on his bed.<br /> <br /> He is soon picked up by a young girl and made famous in the human world, making headlines with the uniqueness that had previously left him feeling isolated. We knew the characters would be created in CG but their location provided a different challenge. I have a fondness for puppetry and worlds with unusual scales so the thought of building the interiors and a forest in a studio was too hard to resist. The dense and fast paced story provided a great opportunity to explore a full range of emotions in the animation performance and I couldn’t be happier with the delivery from the animation team. The rendering and compositing is also superb and the level of detail and technical challenges were executed with a great sense of enthusiasm from all the people involved. Deane Little Theater in New York City. <br /> <br /> DDB created the stop-motion animation video, entitled “Dream,” which captures the plight of four distinct animals suffering at the hands of humans. Set to a newly recorded version of the classic song “I Dreamed a Dream,” the emotional portrayal begins with animals in their natural habitats singing when their life was good. As the song shifts in tone, the animals continue to sing as their lives are threatened by man-made threats to their lives and environment. The New York based digital production company has helped HINGE reveal some of the horrors of modern dating apps with a beautiful, animated online film.<br /> <br /> Set to the soundtrack of Heart’s What About Love, the video is both the unveiling of HINGE’s rebrand and the launch of the company’s new app, which completely does away with the now commonplace swiping feature.<br /> <br /> The campaign plays on a term coined by Vanity Fair last year, who proclaimed that we’re living through a Dating Apocalypse, in a scene that has been crippled by swiping apps.<br /> <br /> Tired of this mindless swipe culture, HINGE - working in collaboration with Red Antler - approached the STUDIO, who were tasked with bringing an animated story about the Dating Apocalypse to life.<br /> <br /> On the campaign’s concept, Mary Nittolo, Founder and CCO of the STUDIO, explains: “It was extraordinary to have a project where we had the opportunity to create parallel universes - the dysphoric world of compulsive and unfulfilled relationships and the idealized place where real connection happens. After we were locked on the animation, the HINGE team suggested adding the references to iconic film romances. They were a brilliant touch - they added a delightful, fairy tale feel to the HINGE world. The HINGE team were amazing clients. At one of the reviews, Katie Hunt, HINGE’s CBO, was actually moved to tears.”<br /> <br /> The story itself follows a hapless hero who forgets how to interact with people, swiping his hands in front of potential love interests instead of engaging with them. Growing tired of ‘Date-O-Pocalypse’, he escapes through an exit, meeting a girl in ‘HINGE world’ who snaps him out of his dating daze.<br /> <br /> “To capture the character’s subtlety, we hired actors - specifically two that were in a relationship - and recorded their performances with the HINGE team and ourselves directing the action,” explains Mary.<br /> <br /> An 18-strong team of artists worked on the project, comprised primarily of the STUDIO staff alongside a small supplement of freelancers. Starting the project in July, the team went through multiple rounds of character designs and concept art in an attempt to capture the correct style for the piece.<br /> <br /> For the rides, which include Cycle of Loneliness, Catch a Catfish and The One Nighter, the team retained a lot of creative freedom to create tongue-in-cheek attraction that, for the most part, remained the same as the initial sketches.<br /> <br /> “These are the kind of projects I love,” adds Mary. “It was a real collaborative effort to make this project happen on schedule considering the other projects we were already committed to. Leftchannel was challenged to craft an entertaining yet informative public service announcement that would be a call to action for viewers to “reduce, reuse and recycle” plastic packaging.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">“The skills leftchannel brought to this project are valuable for translating a complex issue like this, to visually show this system and how we can make positive changes,” Leila Monroe, a Staff Attorney with the NDRC Oceans Program, says. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">After the organization approached leftchannel to translate the complex issue of plastic pollution to a visual platform with a positive message, Scirocco and leftchannel’s creative team (which included designer/animators Taehee Lee and Nick Schoener) set to creating a concept and script that avoided the usually negative tone found in most environmental PSAs. Rather, they harnessed the studio’s abilities to marry 2D and 3D character animation with motion design to inform viewers in a positive way.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Our goal was to remind people how important this issue is, without giving the impression that they were being criticized or that we were trying to scare them,” Scirocco says. “Americans have been recycling plastics for a long time, but the current recycling programs aren’t working anymore and NDRC wanted a new approach – one that informs and entertains in a constructive manner.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">That new approach can be seen in the PSA entitled “The Great Plastic Purge” -- a two-minute animated piece that was inspired by after school specials from the 1950s. The character animation style keeps the tone light, which helps engage the audience, while expressing important facts in a way that is never boring. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The PSA opens with a shot of a young boy happily ripping open a birthday present that’s wrapped in numerous layers of plastic, all of which he cheerfully throws away. From there the piece follows the packaging from the boy’s home to the ocean floor, while a chipper voiceover informs about how Americans waste $8 billion a year due to plastics making it into the nation’s waterways.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="388" mozallowfullscreen="" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/60275326?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=ff9933" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="690"></iframe><br /> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">This project presented several challenges. According to Schoener, from a story telling perspective, effectively illustrating why the system was broken was challenging. “We had to first understand it ourselves,” he says, “then communicate it in a way viewers could easily connect with and understand.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">For Lee, the most challenging scene to animate was the underwater scene. “It was complex because it contained a lot of different 2D animated trash objects that all needed to be integrated carefully into the scene. Because the scene connects to a 3D scene afterwards, the integration of the two was tricky -- both 2D and 3D had to look consistent,” Lee says. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Scirocco says, “It was a challenge to take a bleak story and turn it into an optimistic one. Overall, the animation needed to address three main points in a memorable, engaging manner: bring awareness to the issue; suggest that manufacturers be held responsible for coming up with innovative packaging solutions;
